Canada's national beef magazine. To some, the cattle business looks traditional and conservative. That's true to some extent — you can't change that traditional biological cycle of producing one calf per cow per year, and when you're dealing with large animals, a conservative approach is certainly the wise one. Scratch below the surface, and you'll see a different picture. These days, some of the most interesting and revolutionary thinking in agriculture is found in the cattle business. It starts with grass. A resurgence in forage research and management techniques means cattle producers are raising more grass — and more beef — on the same piece of land. The environmental benefits of raising grass rather than grain on lower-class land are being recognized more than ever before. As are the health benefits of beef, with research showing that cattle raised with more grass and other supplements in their ration can produce beef with the same healthful Omega-3 and other fatty acids so widely touted for fish. Many of Canada's beef producers and processors, both large and small, are promoting these attributes as part of their branded beef programs. They're moving up the chain to capture more premiums and more profit from a quality product. So scratch below the surface, and you'll find some of the most interesting people and interesting stories in Canadian agriculture. You'll read about them CanadianCattlemen, Canada's only national beef magazine.
